On Tuesday August 18 Marcel Verhasselt, vice president of the Board, welcomed the 10,000th visitor after the end of the corona lockdown with a free admission and a souvenir. The Hasevoets family from Wellen was the happy recipient of the prize.
Fort Eben-Emael was one of the largest and sturdiest fortifications in Europe and was deemed invincible. The spectacular attack on the Fort on May 10, 1940 by German elite paratroopers signalled the tragic start of the Second World War for Western Europe.
On Tuesday 18 August we welcomed the very first young visitor who came to discover the new set-up of our C-119 in the Aviation Hall.
To mark the occasion Mr Michel Jaupart, acting Director General, presented him with a gift certificate giving unlimited access to our 6 sites.
Come and admire an exceptional moment of aviation history with your children, family or friends.
After a two-month closure it’s such a pleasure to once again wander through museum galleries, to reconnect with their exceptional vibe and to escape from one work to another, from one universe to the next. And to celebrate this renewed delight, what better way than to dive into the diversity and singularity of the Brussels collections in the company of their curators? They take us on a cultural trip strewn with anecdotes and heart-throbs, on a voyage filled with gems and quirky items!
The WHI Gunfire Brasschaat site houses a large collection of vehicles and equipment, either armoured or not. These vehicles and equipment items were mainly used by the Belgian armed forces in Germany. The collection provides an extensive overview of the various weapons within the Belgian armed forces: field artillery, anti-aircraft artillery, infantry, cavalry (tanks-recce units), military engineering and logistics. The objects mainly date back to the years following upon the Second World War, a.k.a. the “Cold War”.
The collection also counts several precious items predating the First World War or from the i...
Discovering the Military Museum is not only wandering through various galleries in order to analyse successive wars. It is of course much more, but do you actually know that? Belgium was liberated 75 years ago. The event heralded the end of the Second World War in Europe. This year the national holiday draws attention to this anniversary. A special tribute will also be paid to all the men and women who, in one way or another, fought Covid-19.
Festivities will be launched at 2 p.m. A parade will be organised, but on a limited scale. The official stands will face the Royal Palace and the King will hold a brief address. Queen Mathilde, Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel, Princess Eleonore, Princess Astrid, Prince Lorenz and Prince Laurent will also be present. Five F-...
Tunic of the 16th Dragoon regiment (2. Hannoversches Dragoner-Regiment), German Imperial Army, model 1915, worn by the German Emperor Wilhelm II.
In May 2020 the WHI acquired a true treasure. The First World War collection now also features a cavalry uniform jacket of the 16th Dragoon regiment, that belonged to the last German Emperor Wilhelm II (1859-1941).
A silk tailor’s label of court supplier Noé & Schultze, with the Emperor’s signature in blue pencil, as well as an embroidered regiment label for the 2nd Hanoverian Dragoon regiment n° 16 with the hand-sewn imperial monogram and crown, do not leave an...
On Wednesday 8 July from 6 p.m. onwards a two-hour DJ set by artist Luna Semara on the Cinquantenaire arcade will air on social media!
Festivals were cancelled, tours delayed, album releases interrupted, etc. Just like the entire cultural sector in Belgium the music scene was and is badly hit by the sanitary crisis. Impact on artists still is difficult to estimate, but the effects will be far from minor, especially for budding musicians. Hangar keeps airing live DJ sets in order to raise money for associations running into financial difficulties because of the corona pandemic.
The fund calls for solidarity a...
